Memory Verse: I John 5:13

Introduction: Possibly no lost person could ever come to believe the doctrine "once saved always saved: or the "eternal security of the believer". This doctrine can only be comprehended by those who have been "born again" and have grown in grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour to the place where they understand the doctrine of God's saving grace.

A person who is saved by grace comes to realize that it takes the same grace that saved him to keep him saved. We are not saved because we deserve or merit it, nor are we kept saved because we deserve or merit it. It was not what we have done for Christ that saved us -- nor is it what we are doing for Christ that keeps us saved Whatever God does, He does perfectly and eternally. Salvation Is A Work Of God's Grace And Hence - Perfect Salvation.

Read the following Scriptures and be able to explain their meaning:

I. If A Saved Person Could Be Lost Again:

A. Jesus deceived us in using the term "everlasting life".
John 3:36
John 5:24
John 6:47
John 10:27-28

B. Salvation is not a gift but wages:
Romans 4:4-5
Romans 6:23
Romans 11:6, 20

C. Man is justified in his boasting:
Romans 3:9-28
Romans 4:2-3

D. Jesus failed to declare the full conditions of salvation:
John 6:28, 29

E. Paul failed to declare the full gospel to the Philippian jailer:
Acts 16:30, 31

II. The Basis Of Salvation Demands Eternal Life:
Eph. 1:1-14 Phil. 1:6
Eph. 4:30 Col. 3:3-4
I John 3:9 II Car. 5:21
I John 5:18 I Cor. 1:7-9

III. Salvation Is A Gift Of Grace - Not A Reward Or A Wage Earned:
Eph. 2:8 and 9
(Be able to illustrate this truth)

IV. Scriptures Tell Us That Spiritual Life Is Eternal Life:
I John 5:13
John 5:24
John 3:16
John 6:39-40

These are but a few of the reasons for believing the Doctrine of The Security of the Believer. Many more reasons and other scriptures could be given. Do you have any?

There are scriptures that appear to teach "falling from grace" or a saved person losing their salvation. We know that if this were possible, we have a serious contradiction of scriptures.

The most quoted verses to prove the possibility of "falling from grace" by those well meaning but very mistaken people are as follows:

A. Galatians 5:3-4. This verse simply says that the person who seeks to be justified by the law
is fallen from this doctrine of grace. You just cannot mix law and grace.

B. Hebrews 6:4-6, 9. "For it is impossible.... (if they shall fall away) to renew them again unto repentance": and now note verse 9.

These verses simply say how absurd it would be to believe that a person could be saved more than one time.

C. Hebrews 10:38-39. There is a head belief that is not to the saving of the soul - there is a heart belief that is to the saving of the soul.

These and several other scriptures that may appear to teach "falling from grace," when taken in there context and in relation to their scriptures are the strongest in setting forth the "Doctrine of the Eternal Security of the Believer."
