PARK FUN DAY was June 19!

We had a great crowd out on a beautiful morning and afternoon for basketball, lob-tee ball, softball, food and fun.

Check out the FunDay photos (links in frame to right).

Letter to The Evening Leader Public Forum, June 21, 1999:
Park Committee Thanks FunDay Visitors

The K. C. Geiger Park FunDay on June 19 was a big success and a lot of fun on a beautiful Saturday in the park. Many thanks to the hundreds of folks who came out to watch or play basketball, baseball, lob ball and softball. (Lots of FunDay pictures are posted on the K. C. Geiger Park web site at http://www.bright.net/~botkin/kcg_park.html.)

The day started with a 3-On-3 Basketball tournament. The winning teams were: (7th & 8th Grade Girls) Haley Fannon, Krissy Haines, Emily Matthews; (5th & 6th Grade Boys) Mark Triplett, Mark Riesen, Bo Frye, Doug Burke; (7th & 8th Grade Boys) Scott Vossler, Kyle Vossler, Alex Lampert; (9th & 10th Grade Boys) Wes Kellermeyer, Kyle Brewer, Matt Schlater, John Pfeffenberger. Each winning team player received an acrylic trophy.

New to FunDay this year was a fast-pitch softball game between the MHS girls softball team and the MHS boys baseball team. Everyone had a great time, but the competition between the teams was clearly serious. Despite a last-inning rally from the girls, the boys held on to win the game, aided by the still-intimidating pitching arm of Amy Bowers (MHS '97), who was brought in as a ringer. Softball Coach Linda Lauth is calling for a rematch next year.

Thanks go out to Charlie Knous at C & C Loft & Lounge and 98.9 "The Bear" for holding their exhibition slo-pitch softball game at the Park for the second year, complete with Jack Hammer's hilarious play-by-play commentary.

Big Bear Stores was a big help with provisions for the cookout, and Brodbeck's Market donated a gift certificate. Thanks to both for the much-appreciated assistance. And thanks to all those who bought burgers, brats, hot dogs, pop and 50-50 tickets; you made FunDay self-supporting and ensured its success.

The K. C. Geiger Park Improvement Committee has organized FunDay the past two years to promote use of the Park and provide a venue for events. Activities that have been suggested for next year include volleyball, soccer, and tennis tournaments. If you are involved in any of these sports and are interested in helping organize an event at next year's FunDay, please call K. C. Geiger Park Improvement Committee secretary... at your earliest convenience.

The next event for the K. C. Geiger Park Improvement Committee is the 7th Annual SummerFest Duck Race, featuring the inaugural running of the Celebrity Time Trials inner tube race. The field of twelve St. Marys celebrities is nearly complete: watch for an announcement soon. This year's Duck Race winner will choose between a pickup truck and a convertible sponsored by Larry Schaaf Auto Sales, Inc., and the prize count is over 50 and still growing. Duck Race tickets are on sale now at Schaaf Auto Sales and the park concession stand.
