Thursday, June 3:

Friday, June 4:

AM - PM                     Arrive at Oxford, collect Arrival Packs (with keys) from the OSAP offices, Third Floor Chester House, 21-27 George St. [Phone (01865) 201132]

 

5:00 PM                               Welcome Party in the Chester House offices.  A chance to meet the other new arrivals and our staff.  Party buffet, wine, beer and soft drinks provided.  Later we will visit a local Oxford pub.

 

Saturday, June 5:

10:15 AM – 12:30 PM   OSAP Orientation.

12:30 PM                      Lunch

1:30 PM                        Tour of Oxford Colleges

3:00 PM                        Tour of the Oxford Union Society.

6:00 PM                        Head of the River Pub

 

Sunday, June 6: 

11:30 AM                     Bus Tour of Cambridge (specifically for Heidelberg group).  Depart from Hertford College, Catte Street, by private coach to Cambridge. We must leave promptly, as it is a two-hour trip to the home of the UK’s second-oldest university. A 2-hour walking tour of the city will include a visit to the famous chapel of King’s College. Return to Oxford by 7:00 PM.  NB:  Please have lunch prior to departing Oxford (or else bring a packed lunch to eat on the coach) as the guided tour will commence immediately upon our arrival in Cambridge at 2 PM.  Bus leaves Oxford at 11:45 AM.  Cost:  £30 (includes bus fare and guided tour).  Participation highly recommended.

 

Monday, June 7:       (all lectures today held in The Library, Chester House)

10:00-11:00 AM            Introduction to the Course – remarks by Drs. Berger, Close, and Wahlstrom;

What is Time? Part I – lecture by Dr. Close.  Read Callender and Edney, pp. 3-88.

11:15 AM-12:15 PM      Group Discussion led by Dr. Close.

 


Tuesday, June 8:        (all lectures today held in The Old Library, University Church)

2:00 PM-3:00 PM          Stonehenge and the Measurement of Time – lecture by Dr. Kate Prendergast, Department for Continuing Education, Oxford University.

3:15 PM-3:45 PM          Group Discussion led by Dr. Close.

 

Wednesday, June 9:  (all lectures today held in The Long Room, New College)

10:00 AM                     New College Induction. Meet in the Porter’s Lodge at New College where a member of the OSAP staff will show you around the college and its facilities.

10:30-11:30 AM            Records of Time: Geologic History – lecture by Dr. Berger.

11:45 AM-12:45 PM      Group Discussion led by Dr. Berger.

 

1:45 PM                        Bus Tour to Statford-Upon-Avon. Depart from Hertford College, Catte Street, by private coach. 7:30 PM Macbeth.  Return to Oxford by 12:30 AM.  Bus leaves Oxford at 2:00 PM.  FREE, but bring money for food and personal expenses.  Participation required.

 

Thursday, June 10:   (all lectures today held in The Long Room, New College)

1:00 PM-2:00 PM          Records of Time: Literature – lecture by Dr. Wahlstrom.

2:15 PM-3:15 PM          Group Discussion led by Dr. Wahlstrom.

3:30-4:30 PM                Brain-storming session for group presentations led by Dr. Berger (in the New College Cloisters or Gardens if weather and availability permit)

 

4:30-6:30                       Drinks at New College.  Further details TBA.

 

Friday, June 11:

9:35 AM                       Bus Tour of Stonehenge, Salisbury, Avebury (specifically for Heidelberg group).

Depart from Hertford College, Catte Street, by private coach to visit Stonehenge. The all-day tour (themed ‘the Mysteries of Ancient Britain’) directed by Mr. Baum of the Cotswold Roaming tour company will include continuous commentary and admission to (and guided tours of) Stonehenge, Salisbury Cathedral, and ancient burial sites across the Salisbury Plain. Return to Oxford by 7:00 PM.  Bus leaves Oxford at 9:50 AM, sharp.  Participation required.  FREE, but bring money for food and personal expenses.  Participation required.

 

7:30 PM                        Twelfth Night, Oriel College.  FREE tickets through OSAP.  Participation highly recommended, time permitting.

 

Saturday, June 12:   

10:15 AM                     Bus Tour of Windsor Castle.  Open to all WISC/OSAP students/faculty Depart from Hertford College, Catte Street, by private coach to visit the famous royal castle. Return to Oxford by 6:00 PM.  Bus leaves Oxford at 10:30 AM.  FREE, but bring money for food and personal expenses.  Participation highly recommended.

Monday, June 14:

2:00-3:00 PM                Tour of the Oxford University Museum of the History of Science with Dr. Stephen Johnston, Assistant Keeper at the Museum & explanation of the current Special Exhibition:

 

“The Most Noble Problem in Nature”: the Transit of Venus in the 18th Century

To observe the planet Venus as a small black disc crossing the sun is a very rare event. It last took place in 1882, but occurs again on 8 June, 2004. This exhibition presents the interest and excitement caused by the phenomenon in the eighteenth century and will include a full-scale reconstruction of Benjamin Martin’s mechanical demonstration of 1769.

 

N.B.  The museum is closed to the public on Mondays, so to get in, come to the gate on Broad Street and go down the steps to basement level. There is an intercom to the right of the wooden door.

9:30-10:30 AM              Geology of the British Isles – lecture by Dr. David Waters, University Lecturer in Metamorphic Petrology, Earth Sciences Department, Oxford University.

Friday, June 18:       Scotland travel. Organized “Birthplace of Geology” trip to Edinburgh, led by Dr. Berger.  May require Thursday departure.  Travel details available at http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/dclose/scotland.htm.  Participation recommended.

10:00 AM-11:00 AM     The Story of Longitude – lecture by Dr. Kate Prendergast, Department for Continuing Education, Oxford University.

 

11:15 AM                     Trip to Greenwich (southeast London) to visit the National Maritime Museum and Royal Observatory Greenwich.  Free admission.  Students pay their own fares on this trip (bus to London  » £7.50 return, Tube » £2).  Self-guided tour details TBA.  Participation required.

 

Wednesday, June 23:

2:00 PM-3:00 PM          What is Time? Part II – lecture by Dr. Close

Concluding Remarks – Drs. Berger, Wahlstrom.

3:15 PM-4:15 PM          Group Discussion led by Dr. Close.

 

7:15 PM-10:30 PM        Boat Ride on Thames River.  Open to all WISC/OSAP students/faculty.

Departs from Salter Brothers Boat Yard, Folly Bridge (just beyond the Head of the River pub on St Aldate’s and Abingdon Road). It is important that you arrive by 7:15pm sharp since the boat will depart at 7:30. Please DO NOT bring your own food or drink.  FREE, but bring money for food/drink.  Participation highly recommended

 

Thursday, June 24:

9:00 AM – 12:00 PM     Student Presentations, directed by Dr. Berger.

 

7:30 PM                        Farewell Dinner, Location TBA (academic robes provided).

 

Friday, June 25:         Open travel.
