Subject: Details for Scotland

Date: Saturday, May 29, 2004 1:22 PM

Hullo everyone,

Here are the details for the trip to Scotland. This trip is *strongly recommended* but, due to expense, not required. It does include time for you to see Edinburgh while we are there.

You will need to make your own travel arrangemenets to Edinburgh either by train (http://www.britrail.com) or by bus (http://www.britbus.com). The bus is about half the fare but twice the time. There is a red-eye bus that will put you in Edinburgh the next morning.

Suggested itinerary:

Travel to Edinburgh, arrive either late on the 17th or early on the 18th.  Friday, June 18: Tour Edinburgh's Royal Mile on foot.  Saturday, June 19: Meet at the Balmoral Guest House at 11:00 a.m. for travel to Siccar Point. Be sure to bring food or eat before we go. Return to Edinburgh around 6:30 p.m. This trip will be to Scotland's classic rocky shoreline to visit the rocks found by James Hutton and his Oyster Club that eventually led to the revolution in the field of geology. Travel back to Oxford either late on the 19th or early on the 20th.

You will also need to make your own arrangements for accomodations in Edinburgh. I recommend doing this as soon as possible, as hotels, B&Bs, and hostels fill up quickly in the summer. You can make reservations online at the following hostels:

1. St. Christopher's Inn http://www.st-christophers.co.uk (directly across from the train station). If you book here, you will need to stay two nights (cost 13-19 British pounds per person per night)

2. Scottish Youth Hostel Association (SYHA) hostels (there are 5 in Edinburgh) http://www.syha.org.uk (cost 11-20 British pounds per person per night).  Please email me if you have any questions!
