From : GFA Software Technologies To : atari@bright.net Subject: GFA-BASIC Dear Mr. Prusell, Thank you for your informations. But you are a bit to enthusiastic. The reason: GFA-BASIC 3.6 was comming up in 1989 to work under TT and Mega STE with an 68010/68020 processor. Meanwhile there are several generations between and in this way many changings have to carry out till it will work in a correct way. And this is nothing like GFA-BASIC, it's assembler, optimized and for many assembler programmers not readable or let alone to change something. The patches you'll have found are created to change something in the binary code of GFA-BASIC and mostly it works. We understand that you like to work under your Atari systems, but to develop a special version for a multi tasking system and to use the necessary assembler codes for it, that we doesn't understand. Why: GFA-BASIC for Atari was written in an old assembler code which doesn't exist any longer and in this case first the whole code has to transfered to a new assembler language (our programmers thought they might do it with three people in one year - to learn the new language and to transfer the code, but without optimizing or bigger tests). And this will be a total rewrite of it and what the result later??? In this way it's much easier to work e.g. on a PC with the actual GFA-BASIC version or with an Atari emulator (DM 300-DM 600, several are available on the market) and much cheaper, or to work with Linux and it's Atari emulation there, however. The only thing which is needed is to change the hardware and with DM 1000-DM 1500 you'll get an AMD 1,2 GH, 128 MB RAM, 32bit Graphic, 40 GB harddisc, 50 CD ROM, 133 MHZ bus system, Network, soundcard, etc. And this at the end is cheaper as all you want to do, also true if your hour cost only 1 DM per hour.
