The Equipment List

This is the list of everything I have with me at the start of the trip. I thought this would be all the things I needed to handle anything that might happen on this trip. After every adventure, one get a little more experience and little more wiser. For some this be too much stuff, for others far too little. It all depends on your comfort level, what you can live with, what you can live without. I hope that all of this might be of some use in planning your trip.

The Bike

• Schwinn Mesa GS Mountain Bike - 33.0 lbs.
• Thudbuster Uni-Pivot Suspension Seatpost - I was very happy with this suspension seatpost - the best investment I made for this trip

Bike Gear

• Blackburn rear trail rack - mounted on OK
• Sleepingbag holder – homemade – two 1 inch by 24 inch alunimun bar fastened to rack - with bungee cords to hold sleeping bag
• cyclocomputer – Trek, OK
• cycling helmet - Schwinn Crossflight
• 1 water bottle cage
• 1 large size water bottle cage - sized for 1 1/2 liter water bottles, but by bending cage slightly, I could carry various size pop and water bottles
• 7 bungee cords - bungee cords, two 22 1/2 in long,, four 14 1/2 in long , one 9 1/2 in long - used to fastened trap, pad and equipment to bike
• cargo holder – homemade – 3 liter pop bottles with tops cut off – 5 inch OD by 9 inch - with open ends slide in toward each other – for carrying gear
• 4 velcro straps – homemade – 24 inch long with velcro sew on the opposite side on the ends - used to fastened equipment to bike, to compress clothing by wrap strap around material and to wrap around rain pants to keep pants away from the spocket

Bike Tools and Repair

• Cool Tool - 13 tools in one unit with crescent and socket wrenches, allen and spoke wrench, tire lever, chain tool , etc. - OK, except for the spoke wrench is hard to put on the spoke and turn it - crescent wrench work OK to tighten the petals
• Blackburn Kamikaze Mtn Bike Pump - OK
• chain lube – 1 oz. bottle - run out by end of first week
• 1 spare knobby tire - not used
• 1 spare tube - not used
• tire patch kit - no flats on the trail
• extra spokes - four spokes
• bike gear holder – homemade – 2 milk jugs, ½ gallon, with tops cut off and open ends slide into each other

Cooking Gear

• Camping Gaz Turbo 270 stove with automatic Piezo Igniter - easy to operated and the Piezo Igniter work great
• 1 Camping Gaz CV 270 cartridge
• 1 quart stainless steel pan - modify by removing handle
• pot holder
• metal spoon
• Pur Hiker water filter - modify by replace the prefilter with a homemade one
• 2 water bottle – used plastic pop bottles

Camping Gear

• Tarp – 68 inch by 92 inch – with 8 aluminum stakes - the stakes bend to easy
• Ground Sheet – 38 inch by 88 inch
• North Face Over Easy Polarguard sleeping bag - very comfy, but pack size to large
• Therm-a-Rest Pad – ¾ length
• Space Blanket - used once on trip to help keep sleeping bag dry
• nylon rope – 30 feet - for hanging up food in trees

Survival Gear and First Aid Kit

• Atwater Carey First Aid Kit - with bandages, moleskin, iodine and antibiotic ointment - a must have - the following tablets were in the kit
• water purification tablets
• ibuprofen - for pain relief, fever reduction and anti-inflammation
• antihistamine - for allergic reactions, sedation and mild anti-emetic
• Birthday Candles
• Leatherman Pocket Survival Tool - with pliers, screwdrivers, file, knife, can opener, eta - also use as bike tools, repair and for cooking

Misc. Gear

• Yashica Profile Zoom 200 Camera - advanced photo system - lightweight and small size
• 3 rolls of film - one roll in camera
• waterproof wallet - with ID, call card, $$, emergency information, stamps, phone numbers, etc.
• lightweight backpack - frameless - used to extra carry goods and jacket, pants when not worn
• Ray-O-Vac flashlight - with spare bulb tape inside housing - great for cooking in the dark and for reading, etc.
• Battery – 2 AA
• plastic bags
• pen
• Compass – with mirror that can be use to check your face
• Book and maps – The Colorado Trail The Official Guidebook – with maps from the book cut out for each day use

Repair Kits

• electricians tape - a must have
• sewing kit - used it a couple times

Clothing - Bike

• 1 Trek mountain bike shorts - a good pair of shorts
• 1 coolmax short sleeve T-shirt - work great in the rain
• 4 thin nylon socks - works as good as the fancy stuff

Clothing - Street

• 1 polyester dress shirt - worn it on the bike too

Clothing - Cold Weather

• Lowe Alpine Triple Point Ceramic Jacket - windproof and waterproof
• Lowe Alpine Triple Point Ceramic Pants - windproof and waterproof
• lightweight long sleeve polypropylene turtleneck shirt - also used for sun protection

Foot Wear

• One Sport Vitess - lightweight low-cut trail running shoe – uppers are constructed of nylon mesh, moisture-wicking comfort linings, and hydrophobic synthetic leather

Personal

• bandanna - little bit of cotton
• shampoo - in 1 oz size bottle
• travel tooth brush
• travel size tooth paste tube - with less than half of the tooth paste left before trip
• 2 disposable razors
• travel size shaving cream can
• sun screen - a must have
• lip balm - a must have
• vitamin E capsules - use as lotion for sores and burns
• toilet paper
