February 9-11 Mardi Gras in New Orleans
Dorothy and I joined Pinky and her daughter Anne for
a weekend at Mardi Gras. Pinky, a 30-year resident of New Orleans, was the perfect
hostess. Forget traveling on the main streets - there was always a "secret
way" or, on one occasion, a "Super Secret Way" to beat the hoards of
traffic. But it still takes luck to get a parking place 2 blocks from one of the largest
parades.
Pinky
and Dorothy in the French Quarter. The French Quarter, during Mardi Gras, is
everything you may have heard it to be, and then some. But the more outrageous
activities are more/less confined to the Bourbon Street area; many areas of the Quarter
are fairly quiet.
Shown below are Pinky and I at one of the many parades, this one held
during the day.

Our
crew for the evening - Tanya (Anne's friend), Pinky, Anne (Pinky's daughter),
Dorothy. This was taken just before the start of one of the major parades Sunday
evening, headed by Nicholas Cage.

Although we had planned on doing the Webster Cliff Trail in Crawford
Notch, my knee was not up to the task. The day was gorgeous, however, so Steve
McClure, Janel and her son, and I went kayaking on the Saco. Dinner that night was at
Janel and Alex's house, with Tim and Donna joining us.
