Two on one, meaning outnumbered. The two figures to the left are sporting a two-tone fashion, whereas the figure to the right is wearing a traditionally realist attire.
The new kids on the block are crowding out the old fart. Pushing him into the background. Pushing him into the receding green. And with a slight smirk to go with their air of smugness. The old fart appears none too happy about this turn of events. The old fart doesn't even appear to be all that old! In fact he's not old -- in appearance. But quite old in tradition. His glare tells his side of the story. Who do they think they are with their plain two-tone coloring and featureless faces? Who do they think they are strolling into his world and shoving him off stage? He's still in control, however. And he always will be. He has the admiration and respect of the majority. The majority. Not all of them art lovers. Not all of them knowledgeable in the arts. Not all of them even knowing why they admire him so. And yet they do. They like him. He's what they want. He makes them feel comfortable. He's like a friend from elementary school who hasn't been seen in many, many years. But these gaudy, red and orange and yellow stripes are not making him feel all that comfortable. In fact they are making him nauseous. Aggresive colors struggling with the figures for control of the real estate. Passive green creating a safe place of refuge. A place one can retreat to and regroup or ponder the options. What happened to the landscape, anyway? What's with all these flat colors? No shape. No third dimensional rendering. Black -- right out of the tube. Straight-edge geometry. These two punks look flat and lifeless. Or do they? |
