Playing Games

animated diceI started role-playing in 1980 with D&D. Since then I have branched out in wargames, board games, computer games, and a little bit of card games. I am not particularly good at any of them, but I have fun playing and once in a while I even win. Here are some of each kind that I enjoy.

  • We occasionally get to play 3rd Edition D&D, which we like. The changes made really added to the flexibility and enjoyment of the game. They did make some things a bit more difficult for the DM, but that is okay. The end result is usually worth the effort. The number of links for 3E and/or d20 is overwhelming. Here are a few I like.

    • ProFantasy Software - CC2 Pro ProFantasy created some really nice mapping software. It can have a stiff learning curve, although they have improved it a great deal, and are still working on it. The support is great, both on the web site and on the mailing list.

    • EN World - D&D-d20 System News & Reviews is a very good place to check out the latest information, news, and rumours on the web. The Front page is full of the latest info, and the forum is a good place to discuss ideas, plots, rules, and almost everything else with fellow gamers.

    • The Realm of Mythosa is primarily a site devoted to the world that the owner has developed and uses for his 3E campaign. But it also includes two very nice programs of great use for DMs, TableSmith (shareware and more than worth the small fee) and Campaign Sage (Freeware). There is also a variety of tables for TableSmith available for download, and a mailing list where you can get support from both Bruce, the developer (he occasionally has updates available within hours of a feature request or a bug report), and the other members of the list.

    • The 3rd Edition - Home is full of interesting articles, reviews, and software for use by 3E players. There is a lot of information here, with the Ask Agimimnon guestion answering articles being a fun to read as well as full of useful information.

  • I enjoy board and historical games a great deal. My favorites are Advanced Civilization and History of the World from The Avalon Hill Game Company. Another favorite from Avalon Hill is the game Up Front. I don't get to play any of these as much as I would like. I haven't found a website for any of these, but I am sure they are out there.

  • I discovered a new game from Mayfair Games. It is called The Settlers of Catan and is an import from Germany. It is for 3 or 4 people and is both simple to learn and challenging to win.

  • The last few years we have been playing another series of games from Mayfair almost exclusively. It is the Empire Builder series of crayon railroad games. We enjoy all the variants, switching off to a different one each week.

  • A good place to find information about various railroad games is the Railroad Games Home Page. It has some pretty good basic information on the crayon games, but it has not been updated lately. Another place to look is the Train Gamer's Association homepage.

  • Star Fleet Battles is a game I picked up while living in Virginia because of the Star Trek connection. The game has evolved along different lines from the TV shows but it is certainly interesting enough to look at even if you don't want to play the game. I do encourage playing it especially if you have an eye for detail. I have a page up here detailing the results from the SFB Tournaments I run at Pentacon.

I play and even run most of the games at various conventions I go to. It is a great way to meet new people and learn new strategies.

I also play a variety of computer games. They have the advantage of not needing a partner, but the disadvantage of being time sinks. At least the good ones are. Here are the current top players on my system.

  • If you enjoy the various Civilization games, you should check out the Civfanatics website.

  • Majesty - The Fantasy Kingdom Sim - Great RTS with a really different system of unit control.

  • Civilization III - PTW - I know most people do not care for the Play The World expansion, but I like the new civs and the other new additions. And I do not use the online multi-player stuff, so it was no loss to me. And if you are interested in any of the Civ games, you need to go check out the Civilization Fanatics page. They have all kinds of information, forums, and a Game fo the Month competition.

  • Iron Dragon Home Page - Eden Studios, Inc. - A conversion of one of the Empire Builder variants to a computer game. Can be played against the computer or online. Very Well Done.

A couple of places to get information on computer games, including strategies, tips, and cheats.
