I picked up the first book in this series on a whim. The premise of a wizard private investigator operating openly in modern Chicago was very intriguing. And as it turned out, very well handled. You are thrown right into the action with Harry Dresden being asked to investigate a grisly murder by the Chicago PD. Things get bloodier and more difficult for Harry as the story progresses, to the point that the White Council (who make sure wizards follow the rules) suspect him of committing the murders. His efforts to survive and catch the real villain are nonstop and exhausting. They are also very well written, with well rounded characters, a consistent use of magic and the supernatural, and a gripping story.
The best part is more books have followed the excellent first novel by Jim Butcher. They have each explored the supernatural in Dresden's world, looking at werewolved, vampires, and the realm of faerie. Each novel builds on the earlier stories, with all of the characters growing and changing as events happen. If they almost died, it has an affect on their feelings and actions in later books. And actions they take have ramifications in the wider supernatural world that surrounds them. An all around excellent series, well worth reading. With 5 books out already, there are hours of enjoyable reading available, then you can wait anxiously for the next one with the rest of us.
