Young Wizardry

If you enjoy Harry Potter, you want to pick up this series while waiting for his next book. While it is dealing with the same idea on the surface, young people learning magic and fighting evil, the tone is very different. The stories have a more direct affect on the world at large than the Harry Potter books. The first five books deal mostly with Nita and Kit becoming wizards and how their adventures change their lifes and the lifes of their families.

While these books are classified as Young Adult, they are good reading for anyone that wants an enjoyable story with interesting characters. There is plenty of action and growth by the various characters, with Nita and Kit going through the most.

The next couple of books are set in the same world as the Young Wizard series, and there are some walk ons by characters from those books, but it focuses on a very different group of wizards. The wizards of the People have the advantage of not having to hide their job from the rest of their race, which helps make up for the fact they do have to hide it from their humans. Rhiow, Saash, Urruah, and the new wizard on Ordeal, Arhu, have to face a couple of very nasty challenges from the Lone Power and not all of them survive.

Diane does a wonderful job capturing the personalities of the cats who star in the books and of cats in general. After reading them you can start to find yourself treating your cats very differently.

Star Trek

Definitely one of the best of the Star Trek writers, just seeing her name on a book is enough to make me pick it up. Her take on the Romulan and Vulcan races are very good, even though they are not consistent with the way things went in Next Generation. The first two Rihannsu books have recently been re-released, and she has written 2 more books lengthening the story. If you are a fan of the Romulans or the Vulcans, you should pick up her novels and get a different point of view.
