McBain's Mysteries
A master of police procedurals. The men of the 87th Precinct have been around since the late 50s, with very little aging. McBain has dealt with social issues, serial killers, and the supernatural in that time. But the center of the books are the mysteries and the way the detectives deal with them. The characters have grown and became friends over the years, as we have seen them fall in love, get married, get divorced, and occasionally died. And it is always nice to see the return of the Deaf Man.
The Last Dance
The latest 87th Precinct novel includes all of our old friends, from Carella to Fat Ollie Weeks to Danny the Gimp. It also includes a mystery, a couple of shoot outs, and the death of one of the longest running characters in the series. The last came as quite a surprise, but it certainly helped personalize the investigation.
The writing is as always clear and easy to follow, even as the investigation is not. But McBain plays fair with the readers, even including some hints early on that are very illuminating in retrospect. All in all a very satisfying read, even if it does end much too soon. I only hope that this is not the last dance of the 87, they are such good friends it would be a shame for them to leave us.
