Trinity Lutheran Church began a brick
repointing project in the summer of 2009. Examination in the spring discovered that
much of the mortar on the east face of the church was failing. Most of the mortar
was loose, some joints had little mortar left in place, and many bricks were loose.
The front portion of the bell tower was also suffering the effects of time and
weather. Deterioration would continue if not corrected. Falling brick and stone would not only compromise
the structural integrity of the church, it could also cause injury. This situation required immediate attention, so a
project to repoint the east side of the church and the entire bell tower was
started.
Masons remove old, loose mortar.
Then, all mortared joints on the affected
walls are ground out ¾. Next, new
mortar is placed in those joints, protecting the wall for years to come. Since the bell tower was already being worked on,
the cross, cupola and louvers are being painted while the 120 lift is available.
As this was an unexpected cost, a
bank loan of nearly $30,000 was required. The church would gladly welcome any
donations large or small. If you would like to
contribute, please send your donation to:
