What is a DUCK RACE?

(You could
read the Rules, but I'm warning you...)

At 6:00 p.m. sharp the gate is raised... and they're off!
Duck Race Start Hundreds of thousands - well, hundreds, anyway (2,238 in 1999) - of numbered rubber ducks (one for each $5 ticket sold) are released on the St. Marys River as the nearby Memorial Park Clock Bell Tower strikes 6 o'clock. The unpredictable current carries the yellow rubber ducks 1/2 a furlong - about 120 yards - downstream at speeds measured in the tenths of a mile/hour.

The ducks float on the lazy current of the St. Marys River.
Hundreds of thousands - well, thousands, anyway (no kidding) - of race fans come to the riverbank to watch the spectacle. Throwing stuff at the ducks or at the DUCK RACE officials in the water is considered bad form, and will draw stern rebukes from the knowledgeable fans (and especially from the DUCK RACE officials). The Official Duck Race Officials await the winners...
Duck Race Finish The ducks approach the finish line to qualify for prizes (over $10,000 in cash and merchandise in 1999). DUCK RACE officials in the yellow shirts and hats place the winners into the chute immediately. This year, the First Place Prize is a 1990 Mustang GT, sponsored by Larry Schaaf Auto Sales, Inc.

The annual DUCK RACE takes place on Sunday during the St. Marys SummerFest, the second weekend of August each year. All proceeds benefit K.C. Geiger Park, a beautiful local public facility. The seven DUCK RACEs run to date have generated over $45,000 for the K.C. Geiger Park Improvement Committee, a private, non-profit organization. Your donations, including the purchase of DUCK RACE tickets, are tax-deductible. All funds are administered through the St. Marys Community Foundation.

1997 was the first year for the DUCK RACE to be on the internet. Learn more DR trivia in the Duck Race Archives.

What's a "Lucky Duck?"

Corporate sponsors of specially colored ducks donate $20, $50, $100 or $200 cash prizes. The next numbered duck to follow a "Lucky Duck" across the finish line wins the prize donated by that "Lucky Duck's" sponsor.

What's the "Lame Duck Award?"

The K.C. Geiger Park Improvement Committee sponsors one prize in each year's Duck Race, the Lame Duck Award. The Race Entrant which finishes dead last at the finish line (the "Lame Duck") wins $100 in cash for its owner, just because.

The Annual K.C. Geiger Park Improvement Committee St. Marys River SummerFest Duck Race is a fund-raising activity of (surprise!) the K.C. Geiger Park Improvement Committee, which is a non-profit organization.
All proceeds from this EVENT and other Committee functions are administered through the St. Marys Community Foundation.
All donations are tax-deductible.

Race Entrant Owner chances of winning depends on how many prizes are donated and how many tickets are sold. EVENT Officials are not required by law to inform the public that buying twice as many tickets doubles the chances of winning.
