Daryl Close
is Professor Emeritus of Computer Science and Philosophy at
Heidelberg University in Tiffin, Ohio. He has served as the Director of the Division of
Natural and Social Sciences, Acting Faculty Coordinator for the Honors
Program, and Chair of the Department of Religion and Philosophy. His previous experience includes Tiffin
University, where he chaired the Division of Arts and Science as well as the
Department of Philosophy for many years, Ohio Northern University, LaSalle College, and
Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Close graduated in philosophy from
Lafayette College (1971) and earned the M.A. and Ph.D. in philosophy from
Temple University (1975, 1976). He is co-author with Nicholas Meier of
Morality in Criminal Justice (Wadsworth, 1995) and of various journal
articles in applied ethics, history of logic, the philosophy of perception, the philosophy of language, and
the philosophy of mind. Dr. Close served on the Board of the American
Association of Philosophy Teachers from 1984 to 2006, co-edited the Association’s
publication, AAPT News,
for more than 14 years, and served as President of that organization
from 2002-2004. He was awarded the AAPT's 2010 Mark Lenssen Prize
for best paper on teaching philosophy ("Fair Grades"), Heidelberg
University's
2010 Distinguished Scholarship/Research Award, and the Jane Frost
Kalnow Professorship in the Humanities, 2012-2014. Dr. Close is a
member of the American Philosophical Association, the Mind Association,
the Society for Machines and Mentality, and the Association for
Computing Machinery, as well as other professional organizations. He is
a Public Library Trustee for the State of Ohio, and serves on the Board
of the Mohawk Community Library in Sycamore, Ohio. Dr. Close has
also served on the Board of the Allen Eiry Senior Center in Tiffin,
Ohio, and was a board member, coach, and Safety Director of Region 1040
of the American Youth Soccer Organization. Dr. Close enjoys
running, gardening, cooking, wine, and playing trombone in the
Heidelberg Jazz Ensemble. He resides on the family farm in rural
Sycamore with his wife Donna, a retired occupational therapist. They
have two daughters, Meredith, a pediatrician, and Hilary, a marine
geochemist.
