Marlene Froning is Ohio's Recycling Volunteer of the Year!

Marlene Froning was presented the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Volunteer of the Year award for her work as a volunteer in Wapakoneta's recycling effort. A special luncheon in her honor was held in Columbus in April 1999.

Marlene started with the scout recycling effort when residents delivered plastic, paper, glass and metal to a barn at the rear of the fair grounds. It was in that initial program that the idea for a drive-through drop-off program which benefited civic groups originated. These ideas have made Wapakoneta's saturday morning program strong and unique in the state.

Marlene is a great motivator which has been evident in the growth of the program over the years. Today there are as many as 34 groups which Marlene regularly schedules and manages as they work at the new center.

Wapakoneta is proud of its recycling system and its volunteers!

Mayor Donald Wittwer presented Marlene with a plaque celebrating her volunteering efforts at the Waste Minization Committee meeting in April. At that meeting Mayor Wittwer reiterated the community's gratefulness for the job Marlene and the other volunteers have done to make our community something to be proud of.

City Councilman David Campbell said, "The real winners are the taxpayers and the City of Wapak."

With a cake and certificates of appreciation, Marlene recognized the efforts of Jim, Homer, Mark, Butch and Rusty who run the daily pick-up routes as well as being responsible for the Saturday drop-off. Also, Marlene recognized the Minimization Committee, Merle Simpson and Dave Riechelderfer for their work.
