Mark's Coast to
Coast Bike Trek
The Southern
States - San Diego CA to St. Augustine FL
Food and Money, Facts and Figures
Trip Itinerary
Food
- Breakfast - fix and ate all breakfast at camp -
mostly can tuna and ramen noodles, potted meat and ramen
noodles, Lipton Pasta and Sauce or Lipton Noodles and
Sauce - my favorite food for breakfast was can tuna in
oil with ramen noodles - a cheap meal, 18 cent for ramen
noodles and 45 cents for the can tuna
- Snacks - oranges, apples, cookies, candy bars and
ice cream bars
- Lunch - bought all lunch on the road (grocery
stores, gas stations, deli, fast food places) or ate
snacks I had on the bike - mostly oranges, apples,
cookies, candy bars
- Dinner - fix and ate about 70% dinners at camp,
30% at restaurants - I fix mostly Lipton's (Pasta and
Sauce, Rice and Sauce, Noodles and Sauce), Rice A Roni,
and Macaroni and Cheese - I often add to these meals can
tuna, meat, can meat, cheese, onions, etc. - the Lipton
meals packs particularly well since it's in an envelope
and are waterproof, so you could stuff them in various
locations in your bags - the Macaroni and Cheese boxes
are only half full, they need to be repack in a plastic
bag to save space and keep dry - bought some grits and
brown sugar for a sweet meal, you can add cheese and ham
or sausage to it
- General Food Notes - I carry no salt, pepper or
spices with me - only once I had a cheap band of Macaroni
and Cheese too bland to eat - for butter I use the
squeezeable vegetable oil spread that came in a plastic
bottle - I always try carrying one day of food supplies
on the bike, remote areas more - I lost 30 LB of weight
on the trip
- Drinks - oranges are source of juice since they
are more than 95% juice - I often carry a couple oranges
when possible - pop was very expense in remote places
often double or triple in price - for a several days in
west Texas I spent more money on drinks than food - for
trip as a whole probably more money was spent on drinks
than food - at food marts and fast food places where you
serve your own drinks, you can get more juice by not get
any ice, the juice was always cold and the ice is nothing
but a filler - I should drank more water but I don't like
warm water

Money
- Road money - on the road I send a total of $850
for everything (hotels, camping fees, drinks, food,
snacks, supplies, entertainment, stamps, film etc.) from
start of trip in San Diego to the end in St. Augustine -
that come to an average of $17 per day
- Equipment money - since I already have backpacking
gear and clothing, most money was spent for equipping the
bike - cool tool, rear panniers, mirror, tires, bike
shorts, maps, etc.
- Travel money - for air fare to San Diego and bus
fare to return home - I decide not fly home from
Jacksonville FL because of the hassle of - getting to the
airport - getting the bike to the airport - boxing the
bike - higher cost of a last minute ticket - not know
when my arrived date to St Augustine would be
